Reading Counts is an optional reading program at Kennett Middle School. Students read books of interest with an appropriate level of challenge, whether fiction or non-fiction, and then take short quizzes to test comprehension.
Is Reading Counts a part of my grade?
No, not at Kennett Middle School. Although in some cases, teachers may assign book reports and you may have to take a Reading Counts quiz for a class grade. Your teacher will tell you.
How does Reading Counts work?
When you visit the library, you can check out a RC book. RC books are designated with a green sticker stating the Lexile Level. Remember, you may read any book regardless of the Lexile Level, unless a teacher assigns a certain book and/or Lexile Level. After you have completed reading a book, you can take a Reading Counts quiz on your chromebook. Quizzes can only be taken at school, and they must be taken in the presence of a teacher or KMS staff member.
If you earn at least 60% on a quiz, then you receive all the points for the book. If you do not pass the test, you may reread the book and retake the test up to 3 times. However, you must retake the quiz the next school day.
You will have three (3) attempts to pass a quiz. A second or third attempt cannot be made in the same day.
Which books will be best for me to read?
You should read books that are of interest to you. You can search Destiny, our online catalog, to find subjects and authors you are interested in. Each Reading Counts book in our school library is identified by a green Lexile Level (reading level). Most books published by Scholastic are Reading Counts books, as are many of the books you may have at home. If you are unsure about whether or not the book has a Reading Counts quiz, you may look up any book here. CHECK TO SEE IF THE BOOK TITLE IS A RC QUIZ
What types of incentives or rewards will I receive?
This year we have a RC Top 10 CC (Classroom Challenge). The deadlines will be as follows:
Sept. 27 - Top 10 CC Club deadlineOct. 2 - Fall Library Club Day
Nov. 15 - Top 10 CC Club deadlineDec. 2 - Holiday Library Club Day
Jan. 22 - Top 10 CC Club deadlineJan. 27 - Winter Library Club Day
March 6 - Top 10 CC Club deadlineMarch 11 - Spring Library Club Day
Within your particular ELA class, the top students would earn membership in the designated club. Each time period, points would start over. This would be determined according to your points - which is determined by the books you read and quizzes you take.
The incentives would be free time out of class on the Library Club days in the library. You would be allowed to socialize with other students from other grades, play board games, cards, chromebook games, etc. Snacks would also be provided according to the district snack policy.
What is the RC Honor Code?
Below is a copy of the Honor Code. All students should have signed this honor code through Library class.
This Honor Code is a set of rules to make Reading Counts fair for everyone. Students must follow these rules to participate and earn membership in the Library Club.
I promise to: ·take Reading Counts quizzes on books that I read during this school year. ·only take a quiz for a book that I have read completely. ·not take more than three (3) quizzes per day. ·never take a quiz on a book which was made into a movie unless I have also read the book. ·never copy or tell anyone the questions or answers for any Reading Counts quiz, or cheat in any way on a Reading Counts quiz. ·take a Reading Counts quiz only in the presence of a teacher and/or an adult staff member.

What happens if I take more than 3 quizzes in one school day?
If you take more than 3 quizzes in one school day, then those points would be subtracted from your total points. You would also not be allowed to re-take those quizzes on another school day. We want to make Reading Counts a fair program and by setting a certain number of quizzes in a day, we believe we can help to maintain fairness.
Am I allowed to look in the book for answers while taking the quiz?
Yes; but this is the most important thing - YOU MUST HAVE READ THE BOOK COMPLETELY BEFOREHAND.
Here's the reasoning for this. Suppose Kim finished a book on a Friday evening and starts a new book on Saturday. On Monday morning Kim logs in to Reading Counts and begins the quiz on the book she finished Friday evening. Her memory is not fresh and she may not recall exactly what the question is asking. So therefore, Kim may look in the book for help.
When students are taking the ELA MAP test, they have pages of passages to read to answer one question. Students are always allowed to go back and re-read the passages to help them. So therefore, we believe students should be allowed to go back and re-read to get help.
