Two KMS students compete in the 10th Annual Regional Spelling Bee
The Tenth Annual Three Rivers College Southeast Missouri Regional Spelling Bee was held this past Saturday, March 2nd at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center Auditorium at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff. There were 24 schools participating in the Southeast Missouri Regional Spelling Bee. Eight schools from Pemiscot County, six schools from Dunklin County, three schools from Butler County, three schools from St. Francois County, two schools from Cape Girardeau County, and one school each from Bollinger County and Ripley County.
Representing Kennett School District were two seventh grade students, Craig Noblin and Peyton Branum.
Craig is the son of Kris Crossno and Mike Noblin. He was the Spelling Bee Champion back in November of 2018 at the 7th and 8th grade Spelling Bee. In Round One, Craig’s word was “foist”. In Round Two, he was eliminated after having misspelled “cummerbund”. Craig commented, “I was very glad to be there on the stage with other 44 other contestants. I was sad that I was eliminated; however, it was a great experience for me.”
Peyton is the son of Tina Cantrell and Nick Branum. He was the Alternate for the 7th and 8th grade Spelling Bee back in November of 2018. In Round One, Peyton’s word was “opera”. In Round Two, his word was “geothermal”. And in Round Three, he was eliminated after having misspelled “greengage”. Peyton commented, “The Spelling Bee was a great experience for me. I’m glad I was able to participate, having been the Alternate. My parents are proud of me and so am I.”
Mrs. Kim Johnson, Kennett Middle School Teacher-Librarian, commented that “we are super proud of both Craig and Peyton’s accomplishments and their success. It is indeed a great honor and privilege to have the opportunity to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee. Both are great spellers and students at KMS. I know their parents are proud and their teachers are as well. Spelling is a fundamental skill every child needs to learn in order to successfully write the English language. As teachers,
t is our goal to instill these skills in our students so they will develop phonemic awareness. Craig and Peyton represented our school very well.”
Congratulations to all the students that competed, and we wish much success to the winner in the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday, May 30, 2019.

Mid-South Spelling Bee --- March 5, 2016 --- Memphis, TN
Noah Bailey, a 6th grade KMS student, was among 58 competitors at the Al Chymia Shrine Center Saturday morning for The Commercial Appeal's 73rd annual Mid-South Spelling Bee. Students who won their county spelling bees in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Missouri were eligible to spell in the regional competition.
Noah correctly spelled his words in the first two rounds. In Round 1, Noah's word was prescription. In Round 2, Noah's word was thesaurus. After Round 2, 20 spellers remained. All spelling stopped and they took a written vocabulary test. The top 10 spellers were chosen based upon their score on the written vocabulary test. Noah was eliminated after the vocabulary test.
We are very proud of him for being in the top 20 spellers. Although he was very disappointed, he realizes that he will have another chance of competing in Memphis again. He was very thankful for the opportunity to attend. Noah was accompanied by his mother, sister, and brother. They were also extremely proud of his accomplishments. Mrs. Kim Johnson, Kennett Middle School Library Media Specialist, accompanied Noah at the Mid-South Spelling Bee. Kennett School District No. 39 is also very proud of his success. It is an extreme honor for him to participate in the Mid-South Spelling Bee and represent Dunklin County, Missouri.
Noah received a certificate for participating along with a personalized baseball cap with "Bailey" on it!

The Mid-South Spelling Bee was held at 9:00 AM on Saturday, March 1, 2014 in Memphis, Tennessee at the Al Chymia Shrine Center. Two KMS students represented Dunklin County at the Mid-South Spelling Bee.
Hannah Mowrer, 8th grade and Paul Marquez, 8th grade
There were 48 spellers at the 71st Mid-South Spelling Bee.
Hannah was speller number 6 and Paul was speller number 7.

Hannah was speller number 6 and Paul was speller number 7.
2014 Mid-South Spelling Bee
There were 40 rounds in the Mid-South Spelling Bee before a winner was declared. Tupelo, Mississippi, seventh-grader Maria Kaltchenko won the regional Mid-South Spelling Bee to qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May of 2014.
Paul was eliminated in Round 2 by misspelling the word "tamale". He said that he knew how to spell it but he was a little nervous and forgot the e at the end.
Hannah was eliminated in Round 8 with the word "tritium". She spelled it tridium. But right before Round 8, the top 18 students were given a vocabulary test which consisted of 20 multiple-choice questions. We were informed about this test beforehand. From those students scoring well on the test, a certain number would be chosen to go on in the spelling bee competition.
After the vocabulary test was completed by the top 18 participants left, we were informed that since this was the first time for the vocabulary test, after the test, all 18 students would be allowed to go back into the competition. But next year only those that scored well on the test would return to the competition.
The results of the vocabulary test had 11 students in the final competition. There were 5 participants with perfect scores, 1 participant who missed 1, 2 participants who missed 3, and 2 participants who missed 4. One of those 2 participants that missed 4 was Hannah. They announced all the names and had the students return to the stage as they told their score. So Hannah was in the top 11 after the vocabulary test.
Hannah was accompanied by her parents, and both were extremely proud of her accomplishments. Paul was accompanied by his brother and their aunt and uncle and they were also extremely proud of his accomplishments. Mrs. Kim Johnson, Kennett Middle School Library Media Specialist, accompanied Hannah and Paul at the Mid-South Spelling Bee. Kennett School District No. 39 is very proud of their success. The Bee is a qualifier for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May. The Bee also featured contestants from 49 countries from five different states (Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee).
Kara advanced to the Mid-South Spelling Bee after having won the Dunklin County 5th and 6th grade Spelling Contest and the Dunklin County Spelling Bee in January.
Mrs. Kim Johnson, Kennett Middle School Librarian and Spelling Bee coordinator for Kennett said “Kara unfortunately was eliminated in Round 2 missing the word ‘contraband’. The Kennett School is extremely proud of Kara for the wonderful achievement of having participated in the Mid-South Spelling Bee. She won the Dunklin County 5th and 6th grade Spelling Contest in January, and the Dunklin County 7th and 8th grade Spelling Bee. Those are two great accomplishments for a 6th grade student. At the Mid-South Spelling Bee, she competed against other 7th and 8th graders and we are so proud of her and the effort that she gave.”
Continuing, Johnson commented, "Kara is an outstanding student at KMS. She is a very intelligent and respectful young lady. She is a member of LAUNCH (our Gifted and Talented program), on the KMS Honor Roll, and a member of the Reading Counts Club. I am confident that she will be participating in the Spelling Bee again next year. “
