The War that Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Ada deserves the "Best Friend Award" in my opinion for these reasons. Ada grows and changes through her relationships with others. She has not been around people when she lived in her apartment because she never got outside. Now she has many friends that include Margaret, Fred Grimes, Maggie, the Butler, Stephen and the community after she located a spy. She is a friend to everyone. Her best friend is the daughter of Lady Thorton, who is Margaret. She also has a special relationship with Fred Grimes, who is in charge of Lady Thorton's horses. He teaches her about the hooves of the horses which makes her think about her clubfoot. He made her feel normal and she said this, "I helped grain, hay, and water the horses, bad foot and all, and he didn’t say a word about my limping or expect me not to be able to do things.”
Ada also deserves the "Hero Award". At one point, a police officer doesn’t believe Ada’s story about seeing a spy, so Ada thought about how Susan would handle the situation. Ada stood up tall and said, “My bad foot’s a long way from my brain”. Those words have empowered Ada. The policy officer later apologizes and he said that he should have believed Ada. Ada has gained her confidence from living with Ms. Susan. Having confidence is very hard to maintain when you have a disability. Ada's clubfoot is seen as a disability but others are seeing her as a "normal" child and someone who can be whoever she wants to be. Ada is choosing to live her life with hope, a sense of humor, ambitions, and a positive outlook on her future. She is making new friends and developing inside and out.
Susan deserves the "Best Adoptive Mother" Award. She is Ada and Jamie's designated guardian. At first she is not a really nice person, but she learns to love and take care of both Ada and Jamie. When Ada is being cared for by Miss Smith, her physical appearance changes. When Susan sees Ada in her new green dress, she calls her beautiful. Susan makes Ada feel special, like a "normal" person. Ada stated, “I knew Susan wasn’t real. Or, if she was a tiny bit real, sometimes, at the very best she was only temporary”. Later Ada said, “Susan was temporary. My foot was permanent.” Ada is coming around to Susan and realizes that it might not last. Susan empowers Susan by telling her "You're perfectly capable of learning. You mustn’t listen to people who don’t know you. Listen to what you know, yourself”. She is the "Best Adoptive Mother" in my opinion.
