Taylor Robinson, 8th grade Kennett Middle School 1st place in our local school Spelling Bee
Abbi Johnson, 8th grade Kennett Middle School 2nd place in our local school Spelling Bee
Kennett Middle School had two students complete in the Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 23, 2024 in Poplar Bluff. The Kennett School District is so very proud of their accomplishments. It is a great honor to be a participant.
The Regional Spelling Bee began at 10:00 a.m. There were 35 students from 19 school districts participating.
In Round 1, Taylor spelled pear and Abbi spelled collie.
There were 10 spellers that did not show up to participate; so there were 25 spellers to begin with.
In Round 2, there were 20 spellers remaining.
Taylor was up first (as she was Speller 1) and she correctly spelled amusement.
Abbi missed awry. After calculations for the other 11 spellers that were excluded, it seems as though Abbi placed 14th.
With 9 spellers remaining on stage, they started a Championship Round.
Round 3 began.
Taylor Robinson, 8th grade Kennett Middle School student, was in the Champion Round of Spellers.
She was given the word hubcap to spell. She spelled it correctly.
In Round 4, there were 8 spellers remaining.
Taylor was given the word structure to spell. She spelled it correctly.
In Round 5, there were 7 spellers remaining.
Taylor was given the word exclusion to spell. She spelled it correctly..
All spellers remained.
In Round 6, 7 spellers remained.
Taylor correctly spelled celebrity.
All spellers remained.
in Round 7, with 7 spellers remaining, Taylor was given the word navel. She spelled it correctly.
At the end of Round 7, 5 spellers remained and Taylor was one of the 5.
Round 8 began and Taylor was given the word proximal. She started spelling and said p-r-o-p, then she asked for the pronouncer to repeat the word, and she spelled p-r-o-x-i-m-a-l. The second time the spelling was correct; but the rules state that you can't change a letter once it is said. So Taylor was eliminated.
At the end of Round 8, three spellers were eliminated, including Taylor.
Taylor stayed on stage to compete to determine her place.
She tried to spell nucleolus but failed.
In the end, she tied for 4th place with another student.
We are so very proud of Taylor and her efforts!
The Kennett School District is so very proud of both of our students! While most students were probably home asleep in their beds enjoying their first day of spring break, they were on the stage competing and spelling! Congratulations to both of them. They are winners in our school district!
Thank you to Three Rivers Community College for hosting and sponsoring the Regional Spelling Bee!
